- Celine, past client

There are a million reasons why we overeat, and none of them are really about food.

Overeating is not the problem itself.  It is a symptom of the problem - a coping mechanism. We use food to numb the pain of difficult feelings we think we can’t handle.  Connecting with our own feelings and needs will create a new dimension and a deeper understanding in our relationship with food.

Where do I start?

Begin gently, one step at a time

I understand how confusing and overwhelming all this information may be if you’ve just come across it.  Here is the path most people take.

Some words from my clients

People find their own way out

“No one really understands this issue like you do.  They don’t know binge eating and the hell that it is.  You’ve been there and you honestly know what it’s like.  That’s why what you are doing is so unique.  I feel a lot better in this short time and I am already achieving personal goals I never thought would be possible.”
- Allana
“I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, you were such a huge part of my recovery.  I can finally say I see the light at the end of the tunnel.  My relationship with food has tremendously changed and improved and so has my relationship with my husband.  I will always remember that you helped to save my life.”
- Rachel
“Your program was absolutely instrumental in helping me overcome the grip of bulimia.  Two years down the track and I am the healthiest and happiest I have ever been.  I feel like a totally different person than the one that came to see you.”
- Mandie
“You have given me the chance to discover myself, my gifts, and a better way of thinking, feeling and being - which is the greatest gift you could help someone find.  Your presence really sets me at ease.  Thanks for doing what you are doing, it’s so inspiring!”
- Andrea
“Karla is kind and calm.  I came in with thoughts of just listening but felt comfortable sharing very deep feelings about my thoughts right away.”
- Celine
“Thanks for your calm approach and making me feel listened to… A need I have that is not always met!!  And thank you for the time and effort you put into our sessions together, it was engaging.”

Questions people ask me

It’s okay to be unsure

These are the questions almost everyone starts with.

All questions, answered
What exactly do you help with?

I can help you feel more in charge of your eating, no matter how long you may have been overeating.  I provide a support service and there are different levels of support available, according to your needs.  If you have felt stuck in cycles of overeating - whether you identify as struggling with compulsive eating, emotional eating, binge eating or bulimia - I can help you.

As a beginning step, I can help you with a full vocabulary of feelings and needs.  When you get connected with your actual feelings and needs underneath the coping mechanism of “overeating”, a whole new world will open up for you.  My goal is to empower you with the skills, strategies, tools and resources that you can pull out and use to help yourself with - and that way, you get to own all of your own successes too.

Will this help me lose weight?

That’s a really common question, and I’ve wanted to know exactly the same thing more times than I care to remember.  Many people come to this work feeling exhausted by their diets and yet still hoping for some kind of miracle with something else.

My approach isn’t focused on weight loss - it’s focused on empowering you with skills you can use for the rest of your life, for long-term sustainable change that will heal your relationship with food, your body, and help you find your true Self.  Your journey may or may not include weight loss.  Growing trust in ourselves and finding a way to like ourselves is the last thing the Weight Loss Industry wants us to do.

Is this therapy?

No, this isn’t therapy and I am not a Psychologist, or a Doctor.  I provide support to people with their eating issues - I am simply one person who has recovered from her eating issues providing support to another person who is seeking help to overcome theirs.

I use the metaphor of ‘walking alongside you’ like a friend while we work together.  I see my role as a part of your Health and Wellbeing Team - others in your team might include your Doctor, an Exercise Physiologist and maybe a Dietician.

How is this different from working with a Dietitian or a Medical Specialist?

Most traditional approaches to eating issues focus on what you’re eating, and they simply give you a Special New Diet that is supposed to change everything for you.  My approach focuses on why you’re eating the way you are.  And I like to put you 100% in the driver’s seat of your own car on your own journey.

I can teach you skills so you can learn how you might have been feeling at the time you overate, and what your unmet needs might have been - what void were you trying to fill with food?  This information alone has the potential to change the whole dynamic of your relationship with food.

Do I get a rebate from Medicare or NDIS?

The short answer is no.  For comparison: a survey of 5 registered psychologists in Brisbane (December 2024), all specialising in eating issues, found the average cost of a 50 minute consultation is $239.40.  With a Mental Health Plan from your GP you can claim an average of $94.36 back from Medicare for up to 6 visits - an actual cost of $145.04 per visit.

A survey of 4 alternative-style therapists in Brisbane showed an average cost of $137.50 per hour with no rebate available.  My charge is $99 for a one hour phone session, and you don’t need a referral to work with me.

Not ready to talk yet?  That's okay.

Start quietly, in your own time

Leave your email and I'll send you my free Feelings and Needs List - to help you understand what else you could be hungry for besides food.

I don't run a mailing list - I'll only ever email you the odd time about a new book, with a discount for early readers.  Unsubscribe any time.

Overeating is hard.  You don’t have to live like that.

Pick up the phone, or book a time that suits you.  From the very first session we get to work.
