Bulimia Support – A new service for Brisbane

After surviving my own lived experience of Bulimia and working with people with eating disorders including Bulimia for over 20 years, I wrote a book called: “Eating Out of Control – 7 Steps to Understanding why you do it, so you can stop”

Inside it, you will discover there are many hidden meanings to our different eating disorders.  Bulimia in particular is very tricky, and out of all the eating disorders, Bulimia comes with the highest level of feelings of shame and self-disgust – and I personally have large amounts of empathy for anyone struggling with Bulimia.

Bulimia often gets overshadowed by the media’s portrayal of the only eating disorder many people have heard of – Anorexia – and is therefore likely to continue to remain underground and be left untreated.

In my experience, Bulimia is a process of self-loathing.  By being totally caught up in full-throttle self-destruction, we can survive the situation we find ourselves in.

We say “yes” first to please people, then later, after we have stewed over the situation, we say a violent “no” as we reject the food and regurgitate it.  Only this is not a rejection of the food, it’s a rejection of our feelings that we cannot tolerate.

Purging the food from our system gives us an essential release.  It may be an awful practice, but it’s a known quantity.  We know how bad we will feel about ourselves afterwards, and we’ve been feeling bad about ourselves for so long now, that we don’t know any other way to feel.

Literally translated, bulimia comes from a Latin word meaning “ox hunger”.  We’re starving alright, but it’s not for food, we’re starving for learning and enlightenment but we struggle to allow “goodness” in and receive.

I am excited to announce that I am currently preparing a new service for Brisbane: Walk and Talk Sessions and Meal Support Sessions in our local area.

Watch this space as the whole project comes together in the coming weeks as well as the details of this support package specifically designed for people with Bulimia living in Brisbane.

Feel free to contact me at www.supporttostopovereating.com.au if you would like to discuss which support options would suit you best.
