Debunking Myths About Binge Eating

In the vibrant city of Brisbane, common myths persist about binge eating and its seemingly straightforward nature.  People often believe that binge eating is purely about a lack of willpower.  However, as someone who has delved deep into the complexities of binge eating, I want to share why this perception can be a distorted way to view things.

The Myth of Willpower

The idea that people who binge eat simply lack self-discipline is damaging to our person, the little girl or boy inside of us who is aching to be heard.  Our first response as a baby seeking comfort, was to cry for food and when food was offered (maybe as milk from a breast or bottle) we felt instantly better.  Lesson learnt.  Food will always make us feel better.

The Truth Behind Binge Eating

In reality, binge eating is often used as an “effective” coping strategy for managing difficult emotions like stress, sadness, anger, or even loneliness.  In my book, Eating Out Of Control, I discuss how binge eating is more than just eating in response to our feelings; it is an attempt to fill a void or distract us from challenging and uncomfortable feelings.

Understanding this can be illuminating if you are walking the journey of recovery in Brisbane.  Recognizing that binge eating is a reflexive response, and a completely natural attempt to soothe ourselves.

Overcoming the Myth

In Brisbane, embracing self-compassion and Mind-Fullness can transform how you approach recovery. The idea is not to fight against your emotions but to understand them—building a toolkit of coping strategies that nourish your body and soul in a playful way if that’s possible.

To find balance, I encourage you to practice bringing in a sense of curiosity.  When the urge to binge eat arises, ask yourself: What am I feeling right now?  How can I tend to my feelings in a non-food way?

Finding Balance

The path towards finding an intuitive style of eating while still maintaining a sense of enjoyment with your eating requires that you treat yourself with a great deal of respect every step of the way.
